Scholarship help?

I am currently nearing the end of my freshman year in college for a Bachelor%26#039;s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. In addition to this degree program, this fall I am entering into another Bachelors program at another school for degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising. For the first school I paid for it via grants and a Stafford loan for my first year. Because I will be attending a second school congruently I do not qualify for any grants or loans of that sort. I know I can get a loan from like Astrive but the interest rates are killer.

I have been looking into trying to get some scholarships but I would like to know exactly how they work first. I believe the money gets sent directly to the school if I get it. However, do I get to decide which school it goes to? What are the waiting periods on getting the money? Is it a quick process or do I end up waiting months to have the money credited to my tuition? Any help would be great! Thanks ^.^

Hi. I work at a college and have many students in the same boat as you are in.

The first thing I tell them is simple.

Go to the financial aid office of the school you are attending, and ask them about scholarships. They have lots of websites and opportunities that go unnoticed by most students.

About how the scholarships work. While most scholarships are awarded through the school (this way you are guaranteed to have your tuition and fees taken care of before you get all starry eyed by a wad of cash), there are a rare few scholarships that are awarded directly to the student.

The second thing I tell every student is to go to the financial aid office of the school you want to transfer to (if you transfer to get your 4 year degree). It never hurts to apply for as many scholarship opportunities as possible. The worst that can happen is that you are turned down for the money.

like katie said you can go to aidlink and stuff BUT there is a website http://www.fastweb.com/ and you can sign up, you put some info and every so often it will sent you notifications of scholarships that would be good for you, they are chosen according to the info you put. it might be based on your major or year, ethnicity, etc...

they update then often so there is a possibility that you will find something good there...

since you did not specify what kind of scholarship you are going to get, i%26#039;ll give you some insights on how i got my scholarships:

1. before i enter college, i checked all the universities available in my place if they offer some kind of student scholarship programs. then i compared each school%26#039;s scholarship programs on which school gives the most benefits to their students.

2. if your grades are excellent, you can automatically avail the %26quot;full time scholar%26quot; student in that school. free of tuition fees. you will only be obliged for the miscellaneous fees and school contributions.

3. if your grades are average but the school offers an entrance examination wherein if you can pass that examination, you can avail of the %26quot;half time scholar%26quot; student. you pay half of all the tuition fees in that school while the half will be shouldered by the school itself. this can be upgraded into a full time scholar if you will get the excellent grades in all subjects of this school now.

4. some schools/universities offer this kind of scholarship as %26quot;working student scholarship%26quot;. you will render work to this school for about 5hours (depending on the school%26#039;s policy) and your tuition fee will be FREE. BUT there is maintenance of grade (i mean, you need to maintain the grade required by the school/university to avail this scholarship). if you cannot maintain the grades, you will be automatically be stripped off from this program also.

5. while obtaining the scholarship program in that school, look for some offers or news if anyone or some company is sponsorsing some scholarship programs and try to take it also.

%26lt;%26gt;i was a full time scholar in the university i entered (free of tuition fee; books) but i was battling on how to pay the miscellaneous fees and some school contributions. needless to say, not even for pocket money. there was an international organization program being offered to students who cannot afford to pay their tuition fees but have excellent grades to sponsor these students. in our university, there were 50students/applicants who applied to be sponsored but i%26#039;m proud to say myself that i was the only one who passed the exam and oral examination, hence, they got me as one to be sponsored. but because i%26#039;m already free of my tuition fees in school, we agreed ourselves that they could only help me for my miscellaneous fees and some other school requirements; pocket money; clothing; and the like. so i received a monthly cash from them. BUT there was also an agreement made: for failure grades = automatic cut-off of sponsorhip, so they need to inquire your grades at the school administration office for clearance of passing grades.

*i hope you have the courage to do also same as what i did. and my best wishes for you. more power.

I totally empathize, federal funds dry up fast. I don閳ユ獩 know too much about these scholarships, but on http://www.tuitionbids.com, you can find a lot of information on financing an education, including stuff on scholarships, even if you don閳ユ獩 qualify for federal aid. You can also consider applying for a private loan on the website 閳?they actually have up to six different lenders review your application and compete for your business. I represent the company, and they閳ユ獧e a great new resource for people who don閳ユ獩 have time to research a bunch of lenders trying to find the best interest rates (which is basically everyone!). Whatever happens, I閳ユ獡 sure you閳ユ獟l be successful, you seem very driven.
